I am always on the lookout for ways to be a more intelligent shopper. Shopping Second Hand, using browser extensions like Honey, or evaluating the cost per wear. I decided at the beginning of the year to review some of my best purchases over the years based on the cost per wear. The benefit of hindsight cannot be overstated. Oftentimes it is hard to predict which items you will reach for again and again versus the items that don’t really get their fair share of wear.

What is the cost-per-wear rule?

Cost per wear is a simple concept that divides the cost of an item by how many times you’ve worn it. Once you figure out your ideal ‘cost per wear number’ you should apply this to all future purchases. For me, it makes me consider more how often I wear something and if it is worth the cost. While I’m not using EXACT scientific methods, I thought that it would be fun for me to look through my closet to see which items had the highest cost per wear.

I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising, but many of the items that landed high on my personal cost per wear list were pretty big ticket items. These were the pieces that I carefully considered before purchasing and imagined how easily they would match with other items I already owned. When I bought these items, I also thought of their end use and how easy they would be to wear on a day-to-day basis.

With that being said, there are also a handful of items on my cost per wear list that didn’t break the bank and even some impulsive, more budget friendly purchases! These items have been worn repeatedly, even without much thought or higher ticket prices. Note that I also cheated. Don’t be mad, but I did include a couple of gifted items or items I received as gift. For these, I know the price tag and I simply added up how many times they have been worn. Without further ado, these are the ten best cost per wear pieces right now in my closet…
